Men Take Down First Place Bobcats for Third Consecutive Win

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville men's basketball team won their third consecutive game on Monday evening as they defeated the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats - the top team in the AMCC - by the final score of 98-82.

Greensburg was up early in the first half as they scored a quick eight points through the first 1:18 of play. Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School) scored a pair of layups for the Spartans as they trailed 14-12 after nearly five minutes of play. D'Youville started to heat up as Darrius Hartzog (Rochester, NY/Wilson Magnet), Noah Denz (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora), and Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney) drilled threes to go with two more buckets from Rosales to put the Spartans ahead 22-18.

With under 10 to go in the first half, the Bobcats would threaten to take the lead back as they trailed by one twice before taking the lead on a layup at 28-27. Nearly two minutes later, D'Youville would retake their lead as Will Saunders (Cleveland, OH/Euclid) converted an and-one to put the Spartans ahead 32-31 with 5:10 to go in the half. The two teams continued to battle as the half fell to less than a minute remaining with the teams tied at 45. However, Saunders drilled a jumper right before the buzzer to send D'Youville into the half leading 47-45.

Both teams came out swinging in the second half, combining for 20 points in the first 3:16 of play. Denz would score a layup followed by a three to send the Spartans up by five with Rosales scoring a layup to make the score 63-56. Over the next several minutes, Greensburg would continue to push back and stay right in the game as they trailed 67-70 with 10:16 to go in regulation.

The D'Youville lead fell to just one at 70-69, but Devon Darrell (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and Rosales would begin to take over. Darrell scored five consecutive points for the men with a Rosales layup and three Saunders free throws that gave the Spartans a nine-point lead. Rosales would then score five consecutive points of his own to keep the team's lead over the Bobcats, followed by back-to-back jumpers from Darrell made it a 10-point lead. Two Brian Sharp (Newark, NY/Newark) dagger threes put the game away for the Spartans as they took down the Bobcats by the final score of 98-82.

Darrell was outstanding for the men as he set a new career high for the second consecutive game with 24 points. The sophomore tied his career high with 14 assists and was just two rebounds shy of a triple-double as he recorded eight with three steals and two blocks.

Rosales had his best scoring output in conference of the season as he scored 25 big points off the bench and grabbed eight rebounds. Denz had a career game as he scored a career-high 15 points on a perfect 6-6 shooting from the field and 3-3 from three, adding four rebounds.

Saunders added 13 points with four rebounds in the win with Sharp scoring 12 points, all from three. He added three assists with Heard scoring three and Grant Beyer (Williamsville, NY/St. Joe's) dishing out a pair of assists.
