Erie, PA— The D'Youville men's basketball team was unable to extend their winning streak to four games, falling 64-72 to the Penn State-Behrend Lions on Wednesday, January 22.
The Spartans got off to a slow start, not getting points on the board until the after the three-minute mark when Darrius Hartzog (Rochester, NY/ Wilson Magnet) scored off a steal, making it 2-6. D'Youville would then be within three points of the Lions two times with a made free throw made by Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/ Charles Finney) to make it 8-11, and then a free throw made by Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/ Village School) making it 9-12 with 10:17 left in the first half.
The Lions would try to go up by double digits, but with two more free throws and a three made by Heard and a jumper by Will Saunders (Cleveland, OH/ Euclid) narrowed their deficit to four with five minutes remaining . Behrend would continue to extend their lead, but the two teams would go into halftime with the Spartans down seven points, 21-28.
In the beginning of the second half, D'Youville was able to strike first with a layup made by Noah Denz (East Aurora, NY/ East Aurora) and then a three by Hartzog to put the Spartans within two. Saunders would tie the game at 36 with two made free throws with just over 13 and a half in regulation. The tie wouldn't last long with a Behrend bucket. Saunders would then help the Spartans take the lead less than thirty seconds later with a made three.
The two teams would continue to trade the lead off and on until D'Youville would take the lead with just under five minutes to play with another basket by Saunders to make it 57-56. Grant Beyer (Williamsville, NY/ St. Joe's) would help the team keep the lead by sinking two foul shots and a jump shot with 3:39 left.
With 2:27 remaining, Behrend would take the lead for the rest of the game to win72-64.
Saunders led D'Youville with 24 points and nine rebounds, just short of a double-double. Hartzog added ten points, while Rosales and Beyer each had eight. Heard totaled six points and Denz and Devon Darrell (Lockport, NY/ Lockport) grabbed four as well. Brian Sharp (Newark, NY/ Newark) and Latrell Butler (Olean, NY/ Olean) each had quality minutes in the game as well.
D'Youville will next see action Saturday, January 25 when the team hosts Penn St.-Altoona at 1 pm in the College Center Gym.
