Spartan Men Suffer Heartbreaker at Medaille

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville men's basketball team suffered a tough loss to the Medaille Mavericks on Wednesday evening by the final score of 101-96.

D'Youville was red-hot from deep to start the game as Darrius Hartzog (Rochester, NY/Wilson Magnet) drilled a pair of threes with a three from Devon Darrell (Lockport, NY/Lockport) as the Spartans led 9-4 less that two minutes into the game. Medaille would come back to tie the game at 12-12 minutes later, but the Spartans would then go on a 14-1 run following a Brian Sharp (Newark, NY/Newark) three that made it a 26-13 lead for D'Youville. With 8:12 to go in the first half, the Mavericks cut their deficit to single digits before a Latrell Butler (Olean, NY/Olean) made a layup that put the Spartans up 36-25.

As the half crept to under six minutes, Medaille would again bring their deficit down to seven off a made free throw. The two teams would go back-and-forth until Hartzog drilled another three to put D'Youville back up by 11 with 2:41 remaining in the first. Medaille would then close out the half with a three of their own as they trailed 43-51 at the half.

It didn't take long for the Mavericks to close the gap in the second half as they trailed by two at 50-52 after just 1:42 of play. The Spartans would answer to maintain their lead, but after nearly five minutes of play, Medaille tied the game at 60. From that point on, the teams would trade shots until a three put the Mavericks 73-67 with 10:35 to go in regulation, giving Medaille their largest lead of the game. 

The Spartans would fall behind by seven with 7:28 to go in the game, but would begin to fight back. A Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney) free throw followed by another Hartzog three to tie the game at 87. Minutes later, Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School) hit a pair of free throws to give D'Youville the lead back at 91-89. The lead would continue to exchange hands until the Mavericks went ahead by two on a layup with 0:26 to go. The Spartans would come close to tying the game again on free throws, but the team was unable to get the lead back as they fell 101-96.

Six Spartans scored in double-figures in the game, led by Hartzog with 26. Will Saunders (Cleveland, OH/Euclid) added 23 while Sharp scored 13. Rosales scored 12 with a team-high eight rebounds while Heard and Darrell each scored 10. Saunders added a team-high six assists with six rebounds while Darrell dished out five assists and Hartzog had a team-high four steals. Butler scored a pair of points with Noah Denz (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) playing 22 minutes.

The next game for the men will come this Saturday as they host La Roche at 2:00pm in the College Center Gym.
