Steubenville, OH - The D'Youville men's basketball team lost their second-to-last road game of the 2019-20 season on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Franciscan Barons 90-78.
D'Youville got out to an 8-7 lead just over four minutes into the game, extending their lead to 13-7 a minute later. The Barons would go on a small scoring run to take the lead from the Spartans, but D'Youville was able to regain their lead on a Darrius Hartzog (Rochester, NY/Wilson Magnet) three. Threes would then begin raining down from the Spartans as Will Saunders (Cleveland, OH/Euclid) and Hartzog would each hit threes to make the score 22-16 in favor of D'Youville.
For a series of over two minutes, the Spartan's offense would go cold, allowing Franciscan to tie the game. A Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney) jumper would put D'Youville ahead and give the men the lead until the Barons hit a jumper with 4:11 remaining in the half to take the lead by one. The Barons would maintain their lead until the final basket of the half as Devon Darrell (Lockport, NY/Lockport) made a jumper, sending the teams into the half tied at 35.
To begin the second half, the two teams would trade the lead back-and-forth until the Spartans went ahead by five on another made Hartzog three. D'Youville would continue to maintain their lead until a Franciscan layup gave the Barons the lead at 57-56 through 7:36 of play in the half. Just minutes later, the hot shooting from beyond the arc would continue for the Spartans as they tied the game at 63 on a Darrell made three.
Following Darrell's three, the Barons would begin to pull away. Their lead grew to nine with 5:36 to go in the game, but then shrunk to four with 3:40 remaining on the clock. That would be the closest D'Youville would get to the Franciscan lead for the remainder of the game as they fell to the Barons by the final score of 78-90.
Darrell led the team with 23 points and six assists, adding eight rebounds and two steals. Saunders picked up his second double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Hartzog recorded 21 points. Brian Sharp (Newark, NY/Newark) added 12 points.
