Buffalo, N.Y.-The 2013 Fall sports season gets underway this weekend with four Spartan squads getting their first taste of live action.
Men's soccer, now under the direction of new Head Coach Brendan Murphy, open season with the opening match at the Keuka College Lakeside Invitational. August 30 D'Youville squares off against Wells College at 4:00 p.m. at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex in Keuka Park, N.Y. You can follow watch the game live or follow with live stats.
The Spartans return eight players from last season's roster, led by goalkeeper Matt Smith (Bergen, NY/Byron-Bergen), last season's team MVP Tyler Beach (Niagara, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield), and Nick Johnson (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield).
"I am looking forward to this experience," said Murphy. "We'll have some initial growing pains and we'll learn from them with the goal of getting to where I think we can be as the season progresses."
The Spartan program is in good hands with former National Champion goalkeeper at St. Lawrence University. Over the summer, Murphy guided FC Buffalo to a postseason berth in the National Premier Soccer League.
The team will play their second match of the Lakeside Invitational August 31 at 6:30 p.m. versus event host Keuka College.
Women's soccer also will play their opener on the road with a contest at SUNYIT August 30 at 5:00 p.m. Head coach Lew Potter's roster goes 24 deep and has depth on offense and defense. The much heralded defensive group from last season returns in full, joining the program's all-time leading scorer Danielle Gehen (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) and last year's rookie record setter Rebecca Alvira (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy Academy).
The Spartans return home to host Hiram College September 1 at the Riverside Athletic Complex. Start time is 1:00 p.m.
Women's volleyball travels to Wells College for their season opener August 30, then play two matches in the College Center Gym August 31. At noon the Spartans face Morrisville State and Keuka College at 2:00 p.m. John Hutton's team is looking to 2013 season off to a good start. There is one early season milestone watch. Senior Lara Svensson (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) is 67 digs shy of becoming the sixth D'Youville women's player to reach 1,000 for their career.
Golf tees it up August 31 at Pine Acres Country Club site of the Pitt-Bradford Invitational. Head Coach Dirk Roth's experienced group features last season's All-Conference selection Joe Bellavia (Amherst, NY/Canisius) and past team MVP's Joel Costanzo II (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) and Harrison Civin (Clarence, NY/Clarence).
