Men's Soccer Closes Out the 2013 Season

Cresson, PA- The men's soccer team ended the 2013 season with a 6-2 loss to Mt. Aloysius College on Saturday afternoon.

Matt Smith (Bergen, NY/Byron-Bergen) scored both D'Youville goals. Smith played in 66 matches for the Spartans, primarily as a goalkeeper but closed his D'Youville career as the team's leading scorer in the 2013 season after totaling three goals in the final two matches.

The Spartans went down 1-0 on an own goal in the 15th minute of play. Smith's first of the game came in the 27th minute and tied the game at 1-1. The free kick was beautifully struck, went around the wall of players, and went just under the crossbar for the goal.

The game stayed tied until the 61st minute when D'Youville had another own goal and gave up a goal ten minutes later making it 3-1. Smith's second goal of the contest came off a pass from Mike Gillen (Elma, NY/Iroquois). This was Gillen's first career point.

Despite numerous injuries and limited roster size, the Spartans played with a lot of heart this season, giving it their all at every game. Although they will be losing seniors Smith, Matt Veronica (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore East), Tyler Beach (Niagara, NY/Niagara Wheatfield), and Sean Lauer (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) the Spartans look forward to next year and the continued growth their team will make.

"I am so proud of the effort today," said Head Coach Brendan Murphy.  "We kept working hard all season. We never quit and to finish the season strongly sends us off to the offseason with a good feeling. It also sends the seniors off on a positive note. I want to thank Smith, Veronica, Beach, and Lauer for what they did this season. They helped keep the program alive. What they did this season was amazing!"
