D'Youville Soccer Players Receive More Recognition
Upper90, Western New York's Soccer Magazine, recently came out with their 2013 ALL-WNY Men's and Women's College Teams. Four D'Youville women's soccer players and two men's soccer players received recognition for their performance on the field this past season.
The women's team had at least one player recognized on each team. Defensive player Amanda Drake (West Winfield, NY / Mount Markham) and forward Danielle Gehen (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) were both selected to the First-Team. Defender Mallory Hojnacki (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) was selected to the Second-Team and midfielder Nicole LaVere (Clarence, NY/Williamsville East)was selected to the Third-Team. Drake also received the Division III Player of the Year award for her "skill as a defender on a strong defensive unit."
Women's soccer finished the season with a 11-5-3 record. Upper90 noted that the Spartans finished with the best won-lost record of any WNY collegiate program.
The two players who represented D'Youville on the men's teams were defender Tyler Beach (Niagara, NY/Niagara Wheatfield) who was selected to the Third-Team and goalkeeper/forward Matt Smith (Bergen, NY/Byron-Bergen) who was an honorable mention.
Men's soccer was under the direction of first season Head Coach Brendan Murphy who is also head coach of FC Buffalo. Despite numerous hardships, the Spartans showed tenacity and growth throughout the season and look to improve upon that next year.
