D'Youville Men's Soccer Draws A Tie In Their First Outing

August 29th, 2014 – The 2014 D'Youville Men's Soccer team kicked off their season against Wells College Friday to earn a 0-0 draw after heading into overtime.

In their first game of the Keuka Lakeside Classic, the Spartans fought hard and put forth "a full team performance," according to Head Coach Brendan Murphy.

The two most veteran leaders of the Spartans pushed the team through its first game of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Brett Matthews (Angola, NY/Lakeshore) recorded 15 saves as he shutout the Wells College Express on Friday afternoon. "Brett Matthews came up huge for us with a couple of very difficult saves in high pressure situations," said Murphy on his veteran goalkeeper. Highlighting Matthew's outing was a breakaway save in the final minutes to preserve the shutout.

In front of Matthews was his fellow junior and team captain, Nick Johnson (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield). Johnson played sound defense as he converts to a new position. "We had great leadership from Nick Johnson in his new role as center back," Coach Murphy said.

Youngsters like freshman Brandon Pauly (Owego, NY/Owego) and sophomore Aaron Zelko (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) provided constant pressure up top on the Wells defense in order to break tie.

On the team's first game of the year, Murphy said there was "no quit" and that it "was a full team performance and a great result to start the season."

The Spartans' next game is Saturday, August 30th against the host Keuka College at 6:30pm.
