Men's Soccer Drops Season Opener Against Wells

Keuka, NY – The 2015 D'Youville men's soccer team kicked off their season on Friday afternoon suffering a 3-0 defeat at the feet of the Wells College Express at the Keuka Lakefront Classic.

The two teams played to a scoreless first 30 minutes until the Express broke the scoreless tie and took a 1-0 lead at the 31:45 mark. Both teams battled hard, trading chances and playing aggressive against one another. The first half would end with the Spartans trailing Wells by the score of 1-0.

D'Youville would come out of the gates in the second half with an effort on goal as sophomore Daniel Tarbell (Clarence, NY/Clarence) headed the ball right of the goal following a corner kick from 2014's leading scorer, sophomore Brandon Pauly (Owego, NY/Owego). Tarbell's chance came just over 2 minutes into the second half, but Wells would add an insurance goal soon after.

The Express scored with just under 40 minutes left on the clock to push their advantage to 2. Sophomore Bryce Humphrey (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) put another D'Youville header on frame, but it was saved by the Wells' keeper.

After a barrage of corners from the Express, Wells broke through and scored their third goal of the game to extend their lead to 3-0.

The Spartans would challenge late but to no avail, as D'Youville was defeated by the Wells College Express by the final score of 3-0.

"We knew it was going to be a challenge today in our first game after a short pre-season," said third year head coach Brendan Murphy.

"Credit to Wells, they were organized and took advantage of the opportunities we gave them," Murphy added.

D'Youville was outshot 16-4 and Wells took the corner kick advantage 6-4. Senior goalkeeper Brett Matthews (Angola, NY/Lake Shore) made 4 saves on 7 shots. Four players tied with one shot each.

Coach Murphy knows that his team has a quick turnaround and needs to recover quickly to avoid an 0-2 start to their season.

"We need to take the lessons out of this game, learn and recover quickly for another difficult matchup against Keuka tomorrow."

D'Youville will take on the host Keuka Wolfpack tomorrow for day 2 of the Keuka Lakefront Classic. Game time is 5pm with live stats being available.
