Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville men's soccer team was host to the Division II Daemen Wildcats on Tuesday evening with the result going in favor of the Wildcats, defeating the Spartans by the final score of 1-0.
Daemen's offensive prowess was on display for most of the first half. The Wildcats outshot the Spartans 13-2 in the opening 45 minutes with D'Youville's first shot coming off a header from Brandon Pauly (Owego, NY/Owego) that missed the net just wide in the 9th minute. The team's next shot would come in the 41st minute off the foot of Daniel Tarbell (Clarence, NY/Clarence), but was saved by the Daemen goalkeeper. Despite lopsided shooting numbers, the two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half.
Off the tip-off to begin the second half, the Spartans nearly capitalized on their best scoring chance of the game. Pauly took the ball after a deep pass from Patrick Mann (Brighton, NY/Brighton) and ripped it just wide. The Spartans began to pick up the offensive pressure with Mann getting his first shot on goal in the 53rd minute.
The Wildcats combatted the Spartans offense by breaking the scoreless tie in the 69th minute. After a Daemen corner kick, the ball bounced around in the box until the Wildcat player collected the ball and scored for their first goal of the game.
D'Youville would apply more pressure as the game went on but it was to no avail as the Wildcats would defeat the Spartans by the final score of 1-0.
Goalkeeper Brett Matthews (Angola, NY/Lake Shore) made 9 saves on 10 shots against Daemen. Brandon Pauly led the team with two shots and Dan Tarbell played well on defense.
The next game for the men will come this weekend as they head to Mount Aloysius with the D'Youville women's soccer team to play Mounties in their first AMCC double-header of the season on Saturday.
