Late Comeback Effort Not Enough for Spartans against La Roche

Pittsburgh, PA - The D'Youville men's soccer team's second half comeback came up short Saturday afternoon as they were defeated by the host La Roche Redhawks 3-2.

La Roche immediately took control of the game with a goal just :20 seconds into the game for a 1-0 lead. The Redhawks then added another goal shortly thereafter for a 2-0 lead. They would then continue to keep up the pressure but were unable to add another goal to their lead, ending the half with a 2-0 lead over the Spartans.

For the second straight half, it didn't take La Roche to get their offense going. In the 54th minute the Redhawks got their third goal of the game to take a commanding lead. Around the 68th minute mark of the game, the D'Youville offense began to get going.

Hunter Sherman (Lockport, NY/Lockport) had a shot on goal saved, followed by a shot by Corey Sikora (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore) going wide. In the 78th minute, Sherman broke La Roche's shutout with his third goal of the season. Goalkeeper Peter Petruzzo (Clarence, NY/Clarence) punted a ball to Sherman who beat the Redhawk goalie to cut the deficit to two.

Five minutes later, Sikora scored his first collegiate goal off an assist from Marco Ciccarelli (Rochester, NY/Webster-Schroeder) to bring the Spartans to within one. Mike Lekanka (Newfane, NY/Newfane) had a shot with under two minutes left but was unable to beat the La Roche goalie and the team went on to suffer a loss to the Redhawks 3-2.

Sherman continued to lead the team's offense with his team leading third goal of the season. He led the team in the game with four shots and two on goal. Sikora scored his first collegiate goal after playing the entire season in goal. Ciccarelli picked up his first career point with the assist.

Petruzzo made five saves in the second half of play. Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) was strong in the back once again.

The men will host their next game on Tuesday, September 27th at 7:15pm against the Penn State-Behrend Lions.
