Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville men's soccer team won their second straight game in thrilling fashion on Wednesday evening, defeating the Hilbert Hawks by the final score of 2-1.
The two teams traded chances in the games early minutes. Both teams had four shots each through the first 17 minutes, locked at a stalemate. However, in the 22nd minute, Pat Mann (Brighton, NY/Brighton) lined up for a corner kick and the ball found the back of the net for his first goal of the season, giving D'Youville the 1-0 advantage.
Neither team would have an outstanding chance at scoring until the 42nd minute. Hilbert would take advantage of close free kick and tie the game at 1-1. The two teams would then go into the half tied at 1-1.
Goalkeeper Peter Petruzzo (Clarence, NY/Clarence) was called upon several times in the second half. In the first 14 minutes of the second half, Petruzzo made three key saves to keep the game tied at 1-1. As the half went on, the Spartan defense helped keep the game tied while the offense built attack after attack.
Following a near headed goal by Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) in the 84th minute. In the 86th minute, the Spartans took advantage of a counter attack and grabbed hold of the lead for good.
Brandon Pauly (Owego, NY/Owego) received a pass from Aweso Noor (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) took a deep shot from the right side of the field that arched over the Hilbert goalkeeper's outstretched hands, giving D'Youville the lead. The Spartans would hold on for the final four minutes and win their second straight AMCC game.
Hammer and Mann tied for the team lead with three shots, while the goal-scorers of Mann and Pauly, led the team with two shots on goal. In the midfield, Paul Gettman (Amherst, NY/Williamsville South), Marco Ciccarelli (Rochester, NY/Webster-Schroeder), Rehte Ru (Thailand Refugee Camp/Riverside) and Bryce Humphrey (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) all played strong games.
The defense of Mann, Hammer, Mike Lekanka (Newfane, NY/Newfane) and Allan Wade (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) played outstanding. Petruzzo made 10 big saves over the 90 minutes, earning his second win of the season.
D'Youville will host their final home game of the regular season this Saturday, October 22nd at 4:15pm against the Penn State-Altoona Lions. The team will honor their lone senior, Pat Mann, before the game.
