Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville men's soccer team was eliminated from playoff contention Saturday afternoon after falling to the Penn State-Altoona Lions by the final score of 3-1.
Penn State-Altoona opened the scoring in the 14th minute as they found the back of the next on a nifty through ball to take the 1-0 advantage over the Spartans. After the initial blow, D'Youville began to pick up the pace and put the attack on the Lions. In the 29th minute, that attack broke through.
Pat Mann (Brighton, NY/Brighton) sent a corner into the box that got caught up in traffic. Freshman Marco Ciccarelli (Rochester, NY/Webster-Schroeder) collected the ball in a composed manner and put the ball home to tie the game at 1-1.
Altoona would have several more chances as the half progressed, but none beat keeper Peter Petruzzo (Clarence, NY/Clarence) and the two teams went into half tied 1-1.
THe Lions picked up where they left off in the first half by continuing to bring wave after wave of attacks at the Spartan back line. In the 62nd minute, they broke through to take a 2-1 lead on another through ball.
As the second half drew to a close, D'Youville came close to tying the game. Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) was on the doorstep of scoring his second goal of the season but was denied by the Altoona defense. In the the 89th minute, the Lions added an insurance goal and would win the game by the final of 3-1.
Petruzzo made nine saves in the effort on Saturday afternoon. Brandon Pauly (Owego, NY/Owego) led the team with three shots, followed by Hammer with two. Ciccarelli and Hunter Sherman (Lockport, NY/Lockport) each recorded one.
The men will conclude their 2016 on the road Tuesday, October 25 at Pitt.-Bradford. The game begins at 3:15pm.
