Spartans Suffer Loss in First Road Game of Fall Season

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville men's soccer team was dealt a blow to begin their 2017 season on Friday as the Buffalo State Bengals defeated the Spartans by the final score of 3-0.

Buffalo State opened the scoring early in the game with a deflection off a corner to make the score 1-0 in the fifth minute. The continued to pressure the Spartan's defense five unanswered shots until they broke through again in the twenty-fourth minute, this time off an own goal by D'Youville to make the game 2-0.

As the half continued, the Bengals did not let up as they maintained possession in the Spartan's end. They would increase their shot total but not break through as they went into halftime with a 2-0 lead over D'Youville.

D'Youville played solid defense throughout most of the second half and into the closing minutes. With under three minutes left in the game, Buffalo State would add an insurance goal to make the score 3-0 and give the Bengals a win by the same score.

Senior Peter Petruzzo (Clarence, NY/Clarence) had a solid performance in net, making five saves over 90 minutes. Four Spartans made their team debuts in the game with two earning starts. Hunter Sherman (Lockport, NY/Lockport) had the team's lone shot on goal.

The next game for the men comes tomorrow, Saturday, September 2 as they travel back to Buffalo State to play Fredonia at 4:00pm.
