Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville men's soccer team played to a double overtime draw on Wednesday evening, battling the Elmira Soaring Eagles to a 1-1 double overtime tie.
Each team had their chances in the early goings of the first half, with D'Youville recording the first three shots of the game in the first 10 minutes of play. Over the next 15 minutes, Elmira would pick up their offense by registering a shot on goal, five shots overall, and two blocked shots.
The Soaring Eagles finally broke through on a messy play in the Spartan's box, capitalizing to take a 1-0 lead in the thirtieth minute. Neither team would get a quality chance on goal as the two teams would head into the half with Elmira leading 1-0.
It was a very different game in the second half of play as the physicality and intensity was taken to another level. The Spartans again began to apply pressure to the Elmira defense before the Soaring Eagles would come back with several chances of their own. With less than four minutes remaining in the game, the Spartans would get a great opportunity following an Elmira yellow card.
Just outside the Elmira 18-yard box, Alf Egge (Stavanger, Norway/Stavanger International) curled a ball into the box where Marco Ciccarelli (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) slotted a ball across the box to Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) was waiting to tap home the equalizer. The teams would hold firm at 1-1 after Hammer's game-tying goal, heading into the first overtime period.
Elmira had a few opportunities in the first six minutes of the first overtime period, but the Spartans finished strong with three shots in the final three minutes. However neither team would find the back of the net, sending the game to its second overtime.
D'Youville carried over their late offensive push in the first overtime into the second. The men had three shots in less than a minute that nearly won the game, but they were unable to get the through the Soaring Eagle's defense. The final horn would sound as the two teams tied 1-1.
The Spartans put together a complete game on both ends of the field. In goal, Kyle Dick (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) made his first career start and was a strong presence, making six saves on seven shots over 1:10:00 minutes. The team's three center backs, Hammer, Mike Lekanka (Newfane, NY/Newfane), and Matt Davis (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport), were all exceptional in the back with their ability to block shots and clear away danger. Outside backs Aweso Noor (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) and Allan Wade (Pendleton, NY/Starpoint) played the entire game and were huge in making runs and shutting down the opposition.
In the midfield, Jake Kowalewski (Attica, NY/Attica) controlled the ball well while Ciccarelli picked up his first assist of the season. Egge had two shots on goal with Hammer leading the team with three. Hunter Sherman (Lockport, NY/Lockport) had three shots while Khaled Numan-Ali (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) collecting one shot on goal.
The next game for the men comes this weekend, Saturday, September 9 as they host Nazareth at 1:00pm.
