Wade Scores First Career Goal in Conference Opener Loss to La Roche

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville men's soccer team hosted their conference opener on Saturday afternoon, losing to the La Roche Redhawks by the final score of 5-1.

D'Youville was giving the La Roche back line a difficult time in the firth 15 minutes of play. Forward Hunter Sherman (Lockport, NY/Lockport) had two very early chances, heading a ball just wide of the post and putting a shot on frame that forced the Redhawks keeper to make a save. Following the early pressure, La Roche would take over on offense and begin to build momentum for their offense.

With exactly 10 minutes remaining in the first half, the Redhawks got on the board after a long-range shot deflected off a Spartan defender to into the net, giving La Roche the 1-0 lead. Just under two minutes before halftime, the lead would double for the Redhawks with an open shot in front of goal for a 2-0 advantage after 45 minutes.

To begin the second half, La Roche wasted little time adding another goal to their lead with their third goal of the game after 2:20 of play. A fourth goal came about 15 minutes later for the Redhawks, making the game 4-0. Six minutes later, the guests tallied their fifth and final goal of the game to make it 5-0.

With the end of regulation nearing, the Spartans began to apply more pressure in their offensive third. A Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) header snuck over the bar while a Sherman shot tricked around the La Roche keeper just to find the post. With their continued attack on La Roche, D'Youville would eventually find the back of the goal to break the shutout.

Following a Alf Egge (Stavanger, Norway/Stavanger International) corner, Allan Wade (Pendleton, NY/Starpoint) had a shot saved by the La Roche keeper just to have the ball fall back to his feet and fire it into the back of the net. The score would remain the same as the final horn sounded with La Roche defeating D'Youville 5-1.

The Spartans registered a total of 13 shots in the game, just three behind the 16 that the Redhawks tallied. Sherman and Wade led the way with three each, while Egge recorded two and five others recording one. In goal, Peter Petruzzo (Clarence, NY/Clarence) made five saves and Juan Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School) saw over 20 minutes of playing time.

D'Youville will next play this Tuesday, September 26 as they travel to Penn State-Behrend. Game time against the Lions is 5:00pm.
