Erire, PA - The D'Youville men's soccer team suffered their first road conference loss of the season on Tuesday evening, falling to the defending conference champion Penn State-Behrend Lions by the final score of 1-0.
Penn State-Behrend controlled the ball on offense in the first half of play registering 10 total shots. An outstanding defensive effort from the Spartans helped keep the game scoreless and allowed only four shots to get to goalkeeper Kyle Dick (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili). Jake Kowalewski (Attica, NY/Attica) had the lone shot of the half for D'Youville that went just wide and the two teams went into the half scoreless at 0-0.
D'Youville opened up the second half by recording their first shot on goal off the foot of Jason Wilson (Binghamton, NY/Chenago Forks), but it was saved by the Lions keeper. After that point, Behrend continued to maintain possession in the Spartan's defensive end. The recorded nine shots throughout the remainder of the half, but shot number eight of the half broke the scoreless tie with less than nine minutes in regulation to give Behrend a 1-0 lead.
With less than 0:30 remaining in regulation, the Spartans earned a corner kick and a chance to tie it, but nothing came of it as the final horn sounded and the Lions defeated the Spartans by the final of 1-0.
The starting back line of the Spartans turned in a great performance in their second conference game of the season. Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home), Matt Davis (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport), Mike Lekanka (Newfane, NY/Newfane), Allan Wade (Pendleton, NY/Starpoint), and Aweso Noor (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) each played a hard-fought game in the back, limiting the reigning AMCC champs to one goal. In net, Dick made four saves on just five shots, showing a great team effort against the Lions.
Following Tuesday's game, the men will return home to host the Franciscan Barons on Saturday, September 30 at 1:00pm.
