Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville men's soccer team lost a hard-fought game to the Franciscan Barons on Saturday afternoon by the final score of 2-1.
Within the first five minutes of the game, the Spartans controlled most of the play in the offensive third. Leading goal scorers Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) and Hunter Sherman (Lockport, NY/Lockport) each had registered shots, threatening the Franciscan back line. The Barons then shifted the flow of the game into the Spartan's defensive end with three consecutive shots on goal.
As the teams went back-and-forth in the half, perhaps the best chance of the half came from AJ Wade (Pendleton, NY/Starpoint). Wade found himself on the outside of the box where he ripped a shot to the far right pole. The ball dipped inside and then back outside to narrowly miss the right post and giving the Spartans the lead. Franciscan had two late chances to take the lead, but the D'Youville defense held firm to keep the game at 0-0 after 45 minutes.
Similar to the way they began the game, D'Youville also began the second half strong. Following a Jake Kowalewski (Attica, NY/Attica), senior Jason Wilson (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) found a loose ball in front of net and beat the Franciscan goalkeeper, giving D'Youville the 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute.
Nearly 20 minutes following the Spartan's goal, a Franciscan corner kick got the best of D'Youville for the equalizer. A shot from outside the box found the right side netting to tie the game at 1-1. The Spartans came right back down the field in an attempt to take the lead again, registering two corners and three shots in the four minutes following the goal. However, Franciscan was the team that struck next, taking the lead in the 81st minute.
The Spartans pressured the Barons late with two shots and a corner kick in the final five minutes-plus, but none found the back of the net. Franciscan would hold onto their late lead to win the game 2-1.
Throughout the game, the team defense for the Spartans was outstanding. Goalkeeper Kyle Dick (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) made eight saves on 10 shots and played excellent behind his back line. That back line of Hammer, Matt Davis (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport), Mike Lekanka (Newfane, NY/Newfane), Wade, and Aweso Noor (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) stopped wave after wave of Baron attacks and helped build up the team's offense.
Hammer and Sherman each had a team high three shots and two shots on goal in the game. Wade chipped in with two shots. The team had 13 total shots in the game, seven of which were on goal. Eight total players had at least one shot.
D'Youville will next play on Wednesday, October 4 as they host the Medaille Mavericks at 5:00pm.
