Hamburg, NY - The D'Youville men's soccer team won their second straight game on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Hilbert Hawks by the final score of 5-1.
From the opening whistle, the Spartans took it to the Hawks. D'Youville registered two shots that were blocked within the first three minutes before their third shot of the game found the back of the net. Marco Ciccarelli (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) scored his first of the season off a cross from Jake Kowalewski (Attica, NY/Attica) and put the ball in the net for a 1-0 lead.
Less than four minutes later the Spartans capitalized on their next shot as Hunter Sherman (Lockport, NY/Lockport) split a pair of Hilbert defenders to get in on goal and score his first of the game, increasing the D'Youville lead to two. The Spartans continued to maintain possession in the Hilbert end, recording three shots and two corner kicks in the next eight minutes until they once again found the back of the goal.
Picking up his second assist of the game was Kowalewski, this time finding Sherman off a corner for the third goal of the game. Less than 20 seconds after conceding a goal, Hilbert got on the scoreboard with a hard shot outside the box following a feed from the sideline.
As the half wore on, the Spartans continued to pressure the defensive line of Hilbert. D'Youville finished the half with three shots in the final four minutes and went into halftime leading the Hawks by the score of 3-1.
The second half was a similar story to the first. Both teams had a high volume in shots, with D'Youville recording 15 and Hilbert accounting for eight. Scoreless for most of the second half, the Spartans would add a pair of insurance goals in the final five minutes of the game to seal their second consecutive conference win.
In the 86th minute, Sherman completed his hat-trick after taking a long punt from goalkeeper Kyle Dick (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) and chipping the Hilbert keeper for a 4-1 lead. Just over a minute later, Sherman this time set up the Spartan's goal as Mark Passantino (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) scored the first of his career, giving D'Youville a 5-1 victory over Hilbert.
Sherman was a terror to the Hilbert defense throughout the 90 minutes. He scored his first career hat-trick for the Spartans, leading them with eight shots, five shots on goal, and three goals. His assist gave him a seven-point performace in the victory. Kowalewski picked up a pair of assists in the game, while Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) and Jason Wilson (Binghamton, NY/Chenago Forks) each had three shots.
Dick picked up his second career win by making four saves in net and earned his first career assist on Sherman's third goal. In front of him, Matt Davis (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport), Mike Lekanka (Newfane, NY/Newfane), Aweso Noor (Buffalo, NY/Canisius), and AJ Wade (Pendleton, NY/Starpoint) all had outstanding games.
The next game for the men comes this Saturday, October 21 as the travel to Penn State-Altoona. Game time for Saturday's game is 1:00pm.
