Men's Soccer Clinch Final Spot in AMCC Playoffs with Tie Against Bradford

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville men's soccer team clinched a playoff berth on Tuesday afternoon by tying with the Pitt.-Bradford Panthers 1-1 in double overtime.

D'Youville outshot Bradford in the first half 6-4, but some of the best chances for the men came in the first 10 minutes. Jake Kowalewski (Attica, NY/Attica) had three corners in under a minute with the team having two shots blocked and the team was knocking on the door early to take the lead. The Spartans continued their offensive onslaught, but they were unable to find the goal early as the score remained at zeros.

The Panthers began to build their offensive game up, especially in the final five minutes. Bradford had three scoring chances, but the Spartans kept the Panthers scoreless as the two teams went into the half tied 0-0.

To begin the second half, D'Youville again was on the offensive early. The men had three shots and two corner kicks in the first five minutes of play, but were unable to find the net. It wasn't until the 80th minute until the Spartans were finally able to capitalize on a scoring chance and take the lead.

Aweso Noor (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) took a ball down the right wing from his outside back position and crossed it into the box where he found Marco Ciccarelli (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder). Ciccarelli collected the ball and slotted the ball into the right corner to give D'Youville the 1-0 lead late.

Unfortunately for the Spartans, the excitement from taking the lead was sucked away as Bradford tied the game at 1-1 just three minutes later. Neither team would develop a scoring chance in the remaining eight minutes of play and the two teams headed to overtime.

The two teams combined for only six shots in the two overtime periods. They ended the game in a 1-1 double overtime tie, but that was enough for the Spartans to clinch the final spot in the AMCC playoffs.

Goalkeeper Kyle Dick (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) made three saves in the game behind a solid defensive performance. Offensively, Hunter Sherman (Lockport, NY/Lockport) led the team with seven shots while Ciccarelli had a team high two shots on goal, including one assist.

D'Youville will play cross-town rival Medaille this Saturday, October 28 as the Mavericks host the Spartans at Dobson Field. Game time for the three vs. six matchup is 6:00pm.
