Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville men's soccer team and Delaware Soccer Club combined to put on a youth soccer camp from Monday, August 13 to Friday, August 17 a variety of kids from the local area.
A total of 30 kids were at the camp held at D'Youville's Dobson Field – an all-turf facility built in 2014. Of those 30 kids, 10 community members were awarded the opportunity to participate in the camp through the support of Director of Athletics Brian Cavanaugh and the athletic department staff.
The word was spread about the camp by reaching out to local youth, family, and soccer organizations that had access to potential camp participants. Several members of the camp were reached and brought in by Delaware Soccer Club – an organization that has annually provided roughly $30k in funding for local residents to attend camps. Each participant received a t-shirt and water bottle for being part of the camp.
Head D'Youville men's soccer coach and Director of Delaware Soccer Club Brendan Murphy was the primary organizer of the week-long youth soccer camp. Murphy plans on this new partnership working together for years to come as a way for D'Youville to connect to the local community through soccer.
"We hope this camp was the beginning of a new era for D'Youville Soccer and Dobson Field. Dobson provides the perfect setting and everything we need to put on a highly successful soccer camp," said Murphy.
"There is an opportunity to connect with our neighbors and provide access to a top quality turf field for residents who otherwise, would not have the option. Feedback from the camp has been extremely positive and we have made some strong connections with local organizations which will only strengthen our growing network for future collaborative endeavors."
In addition to Murphy's guidance, coaches in attendance at the camp include Rey Martinez – assistant coach for both the men and women's soccer teams, Alexis Kroese – assistant women's soccer coach, and Justin Lofaro – Delaware Soccer Club coach and former Buffalo State men's soccer player.
The Spartans will begin their regular season on Saturday, September 1 as they travel to Utica to play at 5:00pm. D'Youville made the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) playoffs last season as the sixth overall seed and ended the season with two AMCC all-conference players.
