Buffalo, NY - With an undefeated week, one goal being allowed in two games, and a goal to his name, senior center back and captain Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) has been named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Defensive Player of the Week.
On Tuesday against St. John Fisher, Hammer saved the team in the last minute of the game with a header off a corner to tie the game at 1-1 and give the team a tie after double-OT. To add to his goal, Josh played incredible on defense.
Against Penn State-Altoona, Hammer was a big part of a team defense that allowed just eight shots on goal and shutout the Lions for their first conference win of the season. Hammer is the team's heart and soul and the leader of the back line. His abilities as a leader and a player are crucial to the team's success.
An AMCC Third Team All-Conference player in 2015, 2016, and 2017, Hammer has been nothing short of one of the best defenders in the conference since his freshman season. He had a career season last year with three goals - all from his center back position. He has six career goals but his most important contributions to the team have been on the defensive end.
Hammer is a graduate of Sweet Home High School where he played four years of soccer, four years of basketball, four years of baseball, and ran one year of track. In soccer he was his team's MVP, unsung hero award, WNY Honorable Mention, and ALL-ECIC. In track, Josh set the school record with his teammates in the 4x8. He also played for Black Watch Premier.
