Pittsburgh, PA – The D'Youville men's soccer team overcame a two-goal deficit on Saturday afternoon to tie the La Roche Redhawks 2-2 in double overtime and remain undefeated in conference play.
La Roche had their fair share of chances to begin the game. They would capitalize in the 14th minute on a penalty kick to lead the game 1-0 early. D'Youville would respond rather immediately with a header from Jack Schmittendorf (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) ringing off the crossbar, nearly tying the game. However in the 24th minute, the Redhawks would double their lead to make it 2-0.
D'Youville would again answer back with pressure in the offensive end. Alf Egge (Stavanger, Norway/Stavanger International) had a pair of corners in less than 10 seconds, with the second of the two providing the Spartans with their first goal of the game.
Egge's corner found Khaled Numan-Ali (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) for his first goal of the season in the 28th minute, with the assist being Egge's third point in as many games. Each of the two teams would have their chances in the remainder of the half, but the score would remain the same as the Spartans trailed at halftime 2-1.
As the second half began, La Roche did their best to increase their lead while D'Youville fought to tie it. With just over 20 minutes to go in the half, the Spartans started to increase their number of scoring opportunities. Then in the 80th minute, Hunter Sherman (Lockport, NY/Lockport) scored in his third consecutive game to tie the game at 2-2.
The Redhawks had seven shots in the final nine minutes of regulation, but the Spartans held firm and kept the game tied. After 90 minutes, the teams would go to overtime.
Desperate to earn their lead back, La Roche recorded six shots and three corners in the first overtime period. However the D'Youville men did not budge and shut the Redhawks out for another 10 minutes.
Goalkeeper Kyle Dick (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) came up with three big saves in the second overtime period as he and the D'Youville defense continued to stifle the La Roche offense. The second overtime period and the game would end with the score still tied 2-2.
D'Youville had 15 shots in the game with Sherman leading the team with seven. Egge added five as both him and Sherman had two shots on goal. Numan-Ali scored his first goal of the season while Sherman scored in his third straight game and Egge assisted in his second straight.
Dick made 15 saves in the game to help keep D'Youville undefeated in conference play. The team's defense once again played well against a tough offensive opponent.
The next game for the men comes this Wednesday, October 3 as they play the Medaille Mavericks at 7:15pm.
