Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville men's soccer team picked up their fourth win of the season on Tuesday evening, defeating the Hilbert Hawks 4-0.
Within the first 10 minutes of the game, D'Youville had established an offensive presence in the Hilbert end of the field. The men had totaled four shots and a pair of corners within the first 10 minutes of game action, threatening to score early and often.
After continued pressure, the men finally broke through in the 23rd minute. Alf Egge (Stavanger, Norway/Stavanger International) swung a left-footed corner into the box that found Brian Nwaekeke (Corona, CA/John F. Kennedy) in front of goal. Nwaekeke played the ball back to Jake Kowalewski (Attica, NY/Attica) who ripped a shot through the Hilbert defense and past the Hawk's goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead.
D'Youville continued to possess the ball and work towards doubling their lead as the half drew close to an end. Kowalewski took five corners in less than two minutes as the Spartans nearly connected on several of them, but the men were unable to add another goal before the half as they led after 45 minutes 1-0.
It took just six minutes into the second half before the Spartans would add their second goal. A foul in the Hilbert box allowed for a penalty kick in which Egge stepped up to and struck home, giving D'Youville a quick 2-0 advantage.
Just nine minutes following their second goal of the game, D'Youville tallied their third in the 60th minute. Following a foul, Egge stepped up for a free kick and laid a perfect ball into the box that found the head of Khaled Numan-Ali (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) for a 3-0 D'Youville lead.
Possession remained with D'Youville after their third goal as they looked to build upon their lead. In the 80th minute, Hunter Sherman (Lockport, NY/Lockport) finally broke through for his first goal of the game on a shot from the right side of the box, bringing the game to its final score of 4-0.
In the final 10 minutes of the game, Nwaekeke nearly had a pair of goals to increase the Spartan's lead. In the 84th minute he had a beautiful shot hit off the crossbar and then had another shot go high. The final six minutes would go by and D'Youville would win the game 4-0.
The Spartan defense recorded third fourth shutout of the season, continuing their strong run of play. Kyle Dick (Churchville, NY/Chuchville-Chili) made one save in the shutout as his back line of Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home), AJ Wade (Pendleton, NY/Starpoint), Matt Davis (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport), and Numan-Ali were solid as usual.
Sherman led the team with 11 shots and six shots on goal. Kowalewski added six shots with four form Nwaekeke, three from Egge, and three from Numan-Ali. As a team, D'Youville registered 32 shots in the game with nine different players recording a shot.
The next game for the men will come this Saturday, October 13 as they host Mount Aloysius in the AMCC Game of the Week.
