Depew, NY - Wednesday, May 1 marked a day of celebration and recognition for all of D'Youville's student-athletes at the yearly Athletics Awards Banquet at Salvatore's Hospitality.
Head coach Brendan Murphy and assistant coach Rey Martinez presented the awards to their D'Youville men's soccer team.
Freshman Juan Centeno (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) was named the team's Most Improved Player after becoming and important part of the team's midfield throughout the season. Centeno came on strong as the season went on, starting five of the final seven games of the season. His work ethic and effort that he brought to games and practices made him a valuable young player for the men.
Center back Matt Davis (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) was once again a rock in the middle of the team's defense as he earned the team's Spartan Award at the conclusion of his sophomore season. For the second consecutive season, Davis started every game he played. He was at the heart of the team's defense - one that that recorded four shutouts. The Spartan Award represents a player who exemplifies teamwork, passion and a dedication to their team
To close out his illustrious career, senior center back Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) collected his third consecutive Most Valuable Player award. Hammer - one of if not the best player in program history - started every game he played for the men this season and started every game of his career. Despite playing center back, Hammer finished the season tied for second on the team in goals and tied for third in points.
Josh served as a captain for the men for the past three seasons and is an outstanding leader and has a complete set of skills that make him an exceptional player. In addition to his MVP award, Hammer was named to the AMCC All-Tournament Team and was named an AMCC Second Team All-Conference selection - the fourth all-conference selection of his career.
