Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville men's soccer team improved to 2-0 for the first time in program history after defeating the Thiel Tomcats on Sunday afternoon by the final score of 3-1.
Carrying over from their win on Friday, the Spartans possessed the ball early and took it to Thiel. In just the 7th minute, D'Youville had an incredible opportunity to take the lead with a free kick outside of the box. Senior midfielder Marco Ciccarelli (Rochester, NY/Webster-Schroeder) curled a perfect free kick over the Tomcats wall and past the keeper for an early 1-0 lead.
Following their goal, the Spartans would continue to keep up the pressure on the Thiel defense. Four of the next five shots in the half would come from D'Youville as their continued play at both ends of the field led to their second goal of the game.
A Thiel corner kick was cleared by Matt Davis (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) as the center back beat a Tomcat player to the center line, pushing the ball up to Hunter Sherman (Lockport, NY/Lockport) who beat his defender into the box. Sherman was then taken down into the box, resulting in a penalty kick where the senior forward buried the chance for his first goal of the season and a 2-0 halftime lead for D'Youville.
The second half saw the two teams trade chances extending from the beginning minutes to the end. With the game looking like it all but over, Thiel scored their first goal of the game in the 83rd minute on a ball from deep outside the box and cut the D'Youville lead in half at 2-1.
Despite giving up their first goal of the season, the Spartans answered almost right away to put the game away. Benjamin Cresanti (Bemus Point, NY/Maptle Grove) played a ball to Mwibeleca Tumba (Congo/Fraternity Institute) who beat the Tomcat defender and keeper to increase the lead to 3-1 and clinch the game for the Spartans.
Tumba picked up his team leading third goal of the season in the win while Ciccarelli and Sherman scored their first goals each. Cresanti tallied his first career assist on Tumba's goal.
William Anderson (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) received his second consecutive start and made five saves in the win. The team's defense of Davis, AJ Wade (Lockport, NY/Starpoint), Khaled Numan-Ali (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga), and Jake Kowalewski (Attica, NY/Attica) were solid once again.
D'Youville will hit the road for their next two games, beginning next Friday at Bluffton at 3:00pm. They will then take on Oberlin on Saturday at 1:00pm.
