Aurora, NY - The D'Youville men's soccer team won a thrilling offensive game on Tuesday evening as they defeated the host Wells Express by the final score of 4-3.
Wells didn't take long to make an impact on the game as they scored in the 6th minute to go up 1-0 over D'Youville. Only three shots would come over the next 14 minutes with two coming from the Express, but the third was the first shot of the game for the Spartans and they made it count.
In the 20th minute, Mwibeleca Tumba (Congo/Fraternity Institute) played a ball through the middle to Hunter Sherman (Lockport, NY/Lockport) who chipped the oncoming Wells keeper to tie the game at 1-1. However just three minutes later, Wells would get the goal back to go up 2-1.
The Spartans began to put pressure on the Express with a pair of corners in the 28th minute. Two minutes later in the 30th minute, Sherman would strike yet again as Nick Dumond (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) played a ball in that found Sherman and then found the back of the net for a 2-2 tie game.
As the half wore down, D'Youville kept up their pressure with two corners, a shot on goal, and a pair of offsides. Despite generating more chances, the Spartans saw their opponent's third goal of the half go in as Wells tallied their third of the half in the 43rd minute and went into halftime leading 3-2.
Continuing with the trend of the first of half with one team scoring and the other responding, the Spartans responded almost immediately once the second half started. With the first shot of the half, Tumba dribbled around the Wells keeper to score his third goal of the season and tie the game up again, this time with the score at 3-3.
The opportunities continued to come for each team as the half went on. D'Youville generated several corners while the Express tallied a handful of shots on goal with each team pushing to take the lead.
With the game looking destined for overtime, D'Youville pounced on an opportunity in the 88th minute that would ultimately put the game away. Chris Irakoze (Caen, France/Middle Early College) intercepted a clearance attempt from the Wells defense and beat the Express keeper with a low shot to the left to give the Spartans the 4-3 lead and win with his first collegiate goal.
Tumba and Sherman led the way on offense for the Spartans with Tumba tallying an assist and picking up the a goal and Sherman tallying two goals. Irakoze and Dumond each added to the scoresheet with a goal and assist respectively.
In goal, William Anderson (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) got the start and made four saves - including a save in the final minute to keep the lead for D'Youville. As a whole, the D'Youville defense played a strong game and were able limit Wells to seven shots.
The next game for the men comes this Saturday, September 14 as they host Elmira at 2:00pm at home.
