Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville men's soccer team opened up their weekend by hosting the Elmira Soaring Eagles Saturday afternoon and lost to their guests by the final score of 1-0.
The first 10 minutes of action saw D'Youville pepper them Elmira defense with chances. Four scoring opportunities came from the Spartans, requiring two saves from the Soaring Eagles keeper to keep the game scoreless.
From the 18th minute to the 30th minute, D'Youville took it up a level in terms of their offense. In total, nine shots and six corners came from the Spartans as they forced five saves from the Elmira keeper. Despite all of their chances, the Spartans were unable to get the first goal of the game and the two teams went into the half scoreless.
With their first shot of the second half, the Soaring Eagles took the lead in the 54th minute. D'Youville continued to do their best to get the game tied, but the Elmira defense kept the Spartans out and clinched the game 1-0.
Six players recorded two more more shots in the game with Nick Dumond (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) tallying a team high six. Marco Ciccarelli (Rochester, NY/Webster-Schroeder) and Chris Irakoze (Caen, France/Middle Early College) each had two shots while Jake Kowalewski (Attica, NY/Attica), Mwibeleca Tumba (Congo/Fraternity Institute), and Hunter Sherman (Lockport, NY/Lockport) each had two shots.
The Spartans outshot Elmira 18-4 and generated eight more corners with the totals 12-4. The starting back line of AJ Wade (Lockport, NY/Starpoint), Matt Davis (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport), Kowalewski, and HsaKlo Moo (Riverside, NY/McKinley) all played extremely well in the game. Goalkeeper Kyle Dick (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) made one save on two shots.
D'Youville will be right back at it tomorrow as they host Alfred University tomorrow at 2:00pm.
