Dumond Scores Brace in Loss to Lions

Altoona, PA - The D'Youville men's soccer team lost their first conference game of the season on Saturday afternoon, falling to the host Penn State-Altoona Lions by the final score of 4-2.

D'Youville carried most of the possession through the first 10 minutes of play before the Lions would begin to bring pressure the way of the Spartans. It wouldn't be until the 31st minute when Altoona would score the first goal on a long free kick for a 1-0 lead. Just two minutes later a nearly identical goal would come from the opposite side of the field for a quick 2-0 lead.

With their two goals, the Lions would continue to bring wave after wave of attacks before the Spartans would capitalize on a late opportunity.

In the 39th minute, Nick Dumond (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) dribbled through the Lion defense to fire his second goal of the season home to cut the deficit in half. The late goal would give the Spartans some momentum as they ended the half trailing 2-1.

Nearly 16 minutes into the second half, Altoona added to their lead to go ahead 3-1. However, D'Youville would answer to keep the game close.

A foul in the Lion's box led to a penalty kick in the 75th minute where Dumond would step up and score his second of the game to bring their deficit back down to one with 15 minutes remaining in the game.

With a goal in the 85th minute, the Lions all but put the game away as they would go on to win the game 4-2.

Dumond paced the offense with six shots, five shots on goal, and two goals. Marco Ciccarelli (Rochester, NY/Webster-Schroeder) tallied four shots - all on goal. Tiago Salles (Porto Allegre, Brazil/Colegio Anchieta), Jack Schmittendorf (Hamburg, NY/Frontier), Chris Irakoze (Caen, France/Middle Early College), and Khaled Numan-Ali (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) each had a shot on goal. In goal, Kyle Dick (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) made four saves in the game.

The next game for the men will come in a week as they will host the La Roche Redhawks on Saturday, September 21 at 2:00pm.
