Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville men's soccer team picked up their first conference victory on Saturday afternoon with the final score of 2-0.
The Spartan offense immediately put pressure on the Redhawk defense as they look to set the tone early. In the 7th minute, Marco Ciccarelli (Rochester, NY/Webster-Schroeder) was taken down by a foul in the box and was awarded a penalty kick in which he converted to put the Spartans ahead 1-0.
Things started to get heated between the teams with La Roche going down to 10 men following a red card. That opened the door for the D'Youville offense as they forced the La Roche goalkeeper to make two big saves in the final 10 minutes of the half, but the Spartans would go on take the first half 1-0.
Like they did in the first, D'Youville struck early in the second. Ciccarelli fired a shot at the top of the 18-yard box that was saved by the La Roche keeper and deflected right to Noah Steele (Heuvelton, NY/Heuvelton) who buried his opportunity for his first collegiate goal and a 2-0 lead.
Despite being down a man, La Roche generated quality chances in search of their first goal. However, the Redhawks were unable to get past the D'Youville defense as the Spartans clinched their first conference win of the season with a 2-0 shutout.
Goalkeeper Kyle Dick (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) and the D'Youville defense were very poised throughout the victory on Saturday. Dick made eight saves with the back line of AJ Wade (Lockport, NY/Starpoint), Matt Davis (Spencerpoint, NY/Spencerpoint), Jake Kowalewski (Attica, NY/Attica), and HsaKlo Moo (Riverside, NY/McKinley) had a strong game stopping attacks and moving the ball forward.
Ciccarelli served as the team's top offensive target as he led the team with eight shots and five shots on goal. Koawlewski added four shots from his left back position while Mwibeleca Tumba (Congo/Fraternity Institute) had four with Nick Dumond (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) and Steele each had two shots. Tiago Salles (Porto Allegre, Brazil/Colegio Anchieta) and Dumond had very good games in the midfield while Steele and Chris Irakoze (Caen, France/Middle Early College) were strong on the wings.
It was a complete team effort from the men as the reserves played valuable minutes as well. Khaled Numan-Ali (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga), Benjamin Cresatni (Maple Grove, NY/Bemus Point), Jack Schmittendorf (Hamburg, NY/Frontier), Daniel Bagalwa (Buffalo, NY/International Prep), Jumale Jumale (Buffalo, NY/DaVinci), Alex Armbrust (Elma, NY/Iroquois), Juan Centeno (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North), and Sean O'Connor (Tonawanda, NY/Canisius) all provided valuable minutes for the men.
The Spartans will next play this Tuesday, October 2 as they are on the road to face off against the Penn State-Behrend Lions at 5:00pm.
