Greensburg, PA - The D'Youville men's soccer team captured a big conference win on Saturday afternoon as they dominated the host Pitt.-Greesnburg Bobcats on their way to a final score of 5-0.
The game was broken open by the Spartans in the 10th minute as Chris Irakoze (Caen, France/Middle Early College) scored off a header on a ball from Jake Kowalewski (Attica, NY/Attica) for the quick 1-0 lead. That first goal would lead to waves of chances from D'Youville as they looked to capitalize on their momentum.
Greensburg would answer with several chances of their own, but the Spartans would again turn it on as they scored their second of the game. Marco Ciccarelli (Rochester, NY/Webster-Schroeder) doubled the team lead with his 5th goal of the season in the 29th minute - tying for the team lead.
As the game nearly reached halftime, the Spartans would tack another goal onto their lead as Nick Dumond (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) scored his first of the game, sending D'Youville into the half up 3-0.
The second half began much like the first half did - with a D'Youville goal in the first 10 minutes. A foul in the box brought Dumond to the dot and the junior scored his second of the game to put the men up 4-0 - tying for the team lead in goals as well.
D'Youville continued to dominate the game at both ends of the field and would add icing on the cake in the final 12 minutes of the game. In the 79th minute, Cristino Almonte (Buffalo, NY/MST) scored his first collegiate goal as the men would go on to win the game 5-0.
Several players were key contributors on offense in the win for the men. Noah Steele (Heuvelton, NY/Heuvelton) and Dumond led the team with five shots each while Irakoze tallied three shtos - all on goal. Steele led the way with four shots on goal while Ciccarelli scored on his lone shot. HsaKlo Moo (Riverside, NY/McKinley) and Sean O'Connor (Tonawanda, NY/Canisius) tallied a shot each as well in the game.
Another strong performance from the D'Youville defense helped clinch the victory for the Spartans. Kyle Dick (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) made five saves in the victory behind his back line of Kowalewski, Matt Davis (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport), AJ Wade (Lockport, NY/Starpoint), and Moo. Tiago Salles (Porto Allegre, Brazil/Colegio Anchieta) and Dumond helped play key roles in the midfield to shut down the Bobcats.
Khaled Numan-Ali (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga), Jack Schmittendorf (Hamburg, NY/Frontier), Benjamin Cresanti (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove), Jumale Jumale (Buffalo, NY/DaVinci), Alex Armbrust (Elma, NY/Iroquois), and Juan Centeno (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) all saw extended time in Saturday's win.
The next game for the men will be this Wednesday, October 9 at home as they host the Hilbert Hawks at 5:00pm.
