Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville men's soccer team won in blowout fashion on Wednesday afternoon as they defeated the Hilbert Hawks by the final score of 8-1.
D'Youville came out of the gates and dominated possession. Through the first 20 minutes of play, the me totaled eight shots and seven corners before the men finally broke through.
Marco Ciccarelli (Rochester, NY/Webster-Schroeder) sent a ball across the front of goal in the 23rd minute that found Noah Steele (Heuvelton, NY/Heuvelton) for the easy tap-in to give the Spartans the 1-0 lead. It wasn't long before the team would strike again as Ciccarelli again created a goal by dribbling through the Hawk's defense to find Chris Irakoze (Caen, France/Middle Early College) for a 2-0 lead through 25 minutes.
Then in the 29th minute, the score increased for D'Youville to 3-0 off a free kick. With the ball just outside the top of the box, Ciccarelli laid the ball off to Nick Dumond (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) for his third assist in as many goals in the game while Dumond added his sixth goal of the season.
With the half rolling on in favor of the Spartans, they again found the back of the net in the 38th minute as Khaled Numan-Ali (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) headed a cross home from HsaKlo Moo (Riverside, NY/McKinley) for a 4-0 lead. To end the half, Hilbert would receive a penalty kick and convert it to make the score 4-1 after 45 minutes of play.
The Spartans struck early in the second half to increase their lead to 5-1 with Mwibeleca Tumba (Congo/Fraternity Institute) showcased a beautiful piece of skill by kicking the ball over the defender's head to himself and sent the ball past the goalkeeper to increase the lead. Then 10 minutes later in the 58th minute, Irakoze scored his second of the game after collecting his own rebound. Steele then tallied his second of the game with another tap-in from Tumba s the score increased to 7-1.
To cap off the scoring, Sean O'Connor (Tonawanda, NY/Canisius) scored his first career goal off a free kick from AJ Wade (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) as the men would win their biggest game of the season by the final score of 8-1.
A total team effort won the game for the Spartans on Wednesday. Nine different players had an a hand in all eight goals with 20 different players seeing the field. With a season high 36 shots, 15 different players tallied at least a shot in the game as the men dominated play at both ends of the field.
Kyle Dick (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) and William Anderson (Lakeview, NY/Frontier) split time in net as Dick made one save in the first have to earn the victory. Anderson came in for the second half, making three saves in relief.
Cristino Almonte (Buffalo, NY/MST), Benjamin Cresanti (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove), Jack Schmittendorf (Hamburg, NY/Frontier), Daniel Bagalwa (Buffalo, NY/International Prep), Alex Armbrust (Elma, NY/Iroquois), and Juan Centeno (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) all saw extended playing time in the field against the Hawks with six shots coming from them.
On defense, Wade, Jake Kowalewski (Attica, NY/Attica), Moo, and Matt Davis (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) were outstanding as usual with Tiago Salles (Porto Allegre, Brazil/Colegio Anchieta) played a strong game in the midfield.
The next game for for the men will come this Saturday, October 12 as they host Mount Aloysius at 2:00pm.
