Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville men's soccer team won their final game of 2019 on Tuesday evening as they defeated the visiting Alfred State Pioneers by the final score of 5-1.
Senior Marco Ciccarelli (Rochester, NY/Webster-Schroeder) started off the scoring in the 17th minute with a nice through-ball from Tiago Salles (Porto Allegre, Brazil/Colegio Anchieta) where Ciccarelli beat the keeper one-on-one for the games first goal. The game would go back and forth for the remaining 28 minutes of the second half until Alfred State would tie the game up on a penalty kick in the 38th minute, sending the game into halftime tied 1-1.
The flood gates would open for the Spartans in the second half as they would add four goals. Nick Dumond (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) scored his first in the 49th minute after a great individual effort to bring the score to 2-1. Just over 10 minutes later in the 60th minute, Ciccarelli and Salles teamed up again for a goal as Salles this time laid a ball over the top for Ciccarelli to run onto and put the ball away one-on-one with the goalkeeper to make the score 3-1 in favor of D'Youville.
D'Youville would continue to control the ball as the half wore on, eventually adding another tally to their total. Jake Kowalewski (Attica, NY/Attica) delivered a perfect corner kick on the goal line and all Dumond had to do was stick his foot out at the lead increased to 4-1 with 16 minutes to go in the game.
Kyle Dick (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) made three saves while William Anderson (Lakeview, NY/Frontier) made two in relief. Ciccarelli led the team with six shots to go with two goals in his final game while all four of Dumond's shots were on goal.
The back line of AJ Wade (Lockport, NY/Starpoint), Matt Davis (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport), Kowalewski, and HsaKlo Moo (Riverside, NY/McKinley) once again played a strong game in Wade's final as a Spartan. In the midfield, Salles racked up a pair of assists while controlling the ball extremely well.
Sean O'Connor (Tonawanda, NY/Canisius), Juan Centeno (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North), Alex Armbrust (Elma, NY/Iroquois), Jumale, Daniel Bagalwa (Buffalo, NY/International Prep), and Benjamin Cresanti (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) all saw extended playing time in the victory.
