Buffalo, NY - Three members of the 2019 D'Youville men's soccer team were acknowledged as some of the conference's best this season with all-conference honors, announced the conference Tuesday.
Junior midfielder Nick Dumond (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) earned AMCC Second Team All-Conference honors in his first year with the program while senior forward Marco Ciccarelli (Rochester, NY/Webster-Schroeder) and junior defender Jake Kowalewski (Attica, NY/Attica) were named as AMCC Third Team All-Conference players. The three all-conference nominations are the most in the history of the program.
In his first year as a Spartan, Dumond had a massive presence for the men. Nick led D'Youville in goals (8), points (19), was tied for the team lead in assists (3), and third in shots (42) – all from his defensive center-mid position. Of his eight goals, seven came in conference play – tied for third in the conference. Overall, Nick finished tied for sixth in the conference in goals and tenth in points.
Dumond's abilities on the field were not limited as just an offensive threat as he played a vital role in the midfield and breaking down opposing attacks. His ability to read plays, intercept passes, separate opponents from the ball, and win the ball in the air were amongst the best in the AMCC as his defensive abilities often led to counter attacks heading the other direction down the field. His primary position for the Spartans was at defensive center mid, sitting in front of the team's back four. A fantastic passer and finisher, Nick is able to play every position on the field. He started every game for the men this season and was a team captain.
Concluding his career as a Spartan, Ciccarelli saved his best season for last and was the team's top option up top in 2019. Marco finished the season second on the team in goals (7) and points (17), while tied for first in assists (3) and shots (46). Ciccarelli started every game for the men this season while serving as team captain.
The Spartans more than doubled their goal production from last season due in large part to Marco's increased impact on the offense. D'Youville won eight games this season and Marco scored at least a goal in five of those wins. His impact on the team helped lift them to a new level this season. Ciccarelli's speed, foot skill, passing, and free kick abilities helped turn him into a very dangerous attacking threat for the Spartans.
On the back end, Kowalewski was a threat at both ends of the field and became one the conference's best two-way players this season. Jake started all 18 games at left back for D'Youville this season and was the team's best defender. With his speed, quickness, and technical ability, Kowalewski was consistently able to stop opposing attacks on his side of the field and get the ball to safety quickly.
Often times, Jake would be the one to get the ball out of the back by carrying the ball or distributing – two areas he excels at. Jake's ability to get forward and create was evident this season as he tallied two goals and a pair of assists. Both of his goals were game-winners. IN addition, Jake was the primary corner kick taker for the men. His importance to both the offense and defense was massive.
