Buffalo, NY-D'Youville men's volleyball began the 2013 season with an exhibition match versus Niagara College (Ontario) in the College Center Gym and the Spartans won in five sets (25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 17-25, 15-11).
Niagara College is ranked #9 nationally in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association.
Chris Temple (Highwood, IL/Highland Park) led the Spartans with a match-high 20 kills and 5 blocks. The right-side hitter also added 8 digs and 5 assists. Jay Senozetnik (Eden, NY/Eden)directed the D'Youville attack, dishing a match-high 43 assists and added 8 kills. Freshman Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) collected a match-high 12 digs.
D'Youville had the edge in kills (55-48) and in hitting percentage (.234 to .211).
"It's our goal this year to improve offensively," said D'Youville Head coach John Hutton. "The thing I am most pleased with is we had 10 kills and hit .421 in the deciding fifth set."
Niagara was led by Bret Polfuss with 10 kills and Shayne Petrusma with 9 service aces.
D'Youville will open the 2013 regular season January 25 in Utica, NY at the SUNYIT Invitational. The Spartans will open the event versus Wells College at 6:00 p.m. followed by an 8:00 p.m. match versus Sage College. D'Youville will continue play at the event January 26 with two matches played at either 10:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., or 2:00 p.m. against opponents to be determined.
