Men's Volleyball Falls to No. 11 Elmira

Elmira, NY-D'Youville traveled to Elmira College for a United Volleyball Conference matchup and the host swept the Spartans in three sets. Scores were 25-21, 25-18, 25-17.

Chris Krueger (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) had a team-high 14 kills, seven coming in the third set, and 3 blocks. Chris Temple (Highwood, IL/Highland Park) was next with 7 kills and a team-high 10 digs.

D'Youville hung tough with the eleventh-ranked Elmira squad in the first set, opening up an early lead. At 18-18 it got away from the Spartans. Three hitting errors and two service errors down the stretch was the difference.

The second set D'Youville was even until 12-12. Then D'Youville found themselves on the wrong end of a six-point service run. Krueger's third-set effort kept D'Youville competitive in the third.

The Spartans entered the match the current NCAA Division III team leader in digs per set (12.36). They stayed close to their average tonight with 36 to their credit in the three sets played.

"We played well in portions tonight, but not consistently enough to win a set. The way we closed the first set was the difference in the match." said D'Youville Head coach John Hutton. "This conference is so competitive and as soon as you give a team an opening, they take it."

After opening the season 7-1, D'Youville has now dropped four-straight, all in UVC play.

D'Youville will play third-ranked Juniata College Saturday February 22nd in a neutral court match at Medaille College. Start time is at 1:00 p.m.
