Spartans Stopped by #3 Juniata

Buffalo, NY-The D'Youville College men's volleyball team lost a three-set decision to third-ranked Juniata College. Set scores were 25-18, 25-23, 25-22. The match was played at Medaille College.

Chris Temple (Highwood, IL/Highland Park) had a team-high 10 kills. Alex Johnson (Clarence, NY/Clarence) snared a match-high 12 digs. Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) had his finest outing of the season with 7 kills (a .417 hitting percentage) and 4 digs.
Other Spartans performances to highlight were Chris Krueger (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) with 8 kills and 2 service aces and Adam Dean (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) with 4 kills and 3 blocks.
After dropping the first set 25-18, the Spartans jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the second. The lead was later to 18-13 but the the third-ranked Eagles closed the set with a 12-5 run aided by a number of D'Youville hitting errors.
Juniata was cruising in the third until a late D'Youville rally cut the lead to 23-22. The comeback was stalled by a controversial line call.
For the match D'Youville only had 1 less kill than Juniata (38-36), was even in digs (29-29), and had the edge in service aces (6-3).
"We're as good as any team out there," said Spartan coach John Hutton. "One of these matches, we'll stop giving it away late in sets and the end result will be greatly different."
The Spartans have dropped six-straight, five of those losses have come to nationally ranked team.
