Buffalo, N.Y.-It was the first time a team ranked number one visited the College Center Gym and top-ranked Nazareth stayed unbeaten (23-0) with a 3-0 win over the Spartans. Set scores were 25-19, 25-21, 25-22.
Chris Temple (Highwood, IL/Highland Park) led D'Youville with a game-high 10 kills and 11 digs. Temple also had three blocks in the match. Chris Krueger (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) added 9 kills and Adam Dean (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) totaled a match-high 4 blocks.
D'Youville recorded more blocks than the #1 team in the country (6-1), was even in digs (39-39), and only had one less service ace than the Golden Flyers (2-1). Nazareth had a wide margin on offense, tallying 52 kills and a .315 hitting percentage to 30 and .191 for D'Youville.
"The second and third sets we contested pretty well," said D'Youville Head coach John Hutton. "We just didn't make the key plays at the key moments."
There were 6 ties and 2 lead changes in the second frame. After jumping out to a 4-0 lead to start third, numerous times the Spartans would get within 1 or 2 but couldn't pull even.
D'Youville (11-12, 3-8 UVC) will play in this weekend's Nazareth College Purple & Gold Invitational. Friday (March 22) the Spartans play Ramapo College (NJ) at 6 p.m. followed by an 8:00 p.m. match versus #15 Rivier College (NH). March 23 D'Youville has a rematch versus top-ranked Nazareth at 11:00 a.m. and closes the event with a 3:00 p.m. match versus Wells College.
