Men's Volleyball Opens 2014 with Two Wins

Marcy, NY-Men's volleyball opened play at the SUNYIT Invitational and the Spartans won both of their matches to advance to tomorrow's championship round.

In the first match D'Youville defeated Elms College in four sets. Game scores were 25-19, 25-10, 20-25, and 25-10.

Evan Singer (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) totaled  nine kills and five blocks.Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) was next with seven kills, five blocks, and four service aces.

The Spartans finished play on day one with a 3-0 sweep of Cazenovia (25-13, 25-16, 25-21). Singer smacked a career-high 12 kills and Steve Goedtel (Eden, NY/Eden) ran the offense with a career-high 24 assists. Alex Johnson (Clarence, NY/Clarence) had a career-high six kills. 

D'Youville will face host SUNYIT at noon followed by a 2:00 p.m. match versus Wentworth.

"We learned a lot about our players today," said Spartans' coach John Hutton. "Without pre-season scrimmage time we jumped right into play mode pretty quickly. That's a good sign."
