Men's Volleyball Sweeps Penn St.-Altoona, Loses to Hilbert in Final Home Date

Buffalo, NY-The D'Youville men's volleyball started their final home date of the 2014 season in stellar fashion with a 3-0 win over Penn State Altoona. The Spartans never trailed at any point in the match.

Set scores were 25-19, 25-18, and 25-21.

Steve Goedtel (Eden, NY/Eden) tallied a match-high 13 kills and Alex Johnson (Lancaster, NY/Clarence) with a match-high 10 digs.

"It was our best match of the season," commented Spartans' Head coach John Hutton. "We stayed relaxed when it got close and put the hammer down and closed out in the final portion of each set."

D'Youville stayed hot and opened their match against Hilbert with a 25-23 first-set win. After that it was too much Adam Weaver. Hilbert's All-American candidate rang up 23 kills and four blocks and Hilbert won the next three sets 25-17, 25-13, and 25-18.

D'Youville's kill leader was Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) with 12. Ed Kerber (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) added a career-high 9 kills.

In the second match of today's AMCC tri-match, Hilbert defeated Penn State Altoona in three sets behind 22 kills from Weaver.

D'Youville will close the season April 8 at Medaille College. Start time is 7:00 p.m.
