Marcy, NY - Opening their season on the road Friday afternoon, the 2015 D'Youville Men's Volleyball Team split the first day of the SUNYIT Invitational.
In their first match of the day, the Spartans fell to Nazareth 3-1. The Golden Flyers took the first two sets 25-15 and 25-19, with D'Youville answering back in the third set to win 25-12. Despite winning the third set, the Spartans fell in the fourth set 25-12.
D'Youville was led by a pair of juniors on offense. Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) led the team with 9, while Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) was second with 7 kills. Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis), freshman Logan Krass (Oswego, NY/Oswego) and Evan Singer (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) all had a killing percentage of 1.000.
In the team's second match of the day, the Spartans bounced back to defeat Elms 3-2. The two teams went back and fourth in the first 4 sets. Elms took the first and third sets by the scores of 25-21 and 25-18. D'Youville answered each lost set with a win, taking the second and fourth sets with the scores of 25-19 and 25-13. The Spartans took the final set 25-18, getting their first win of the season and the first win of Head Coach Nick Johnson's collegiate coaching career.
Senior Alex Johnson (Lancaster, NY/Clarence) recorded 15 digs to lead the team. Freshman Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) was second on the team with 11 digs. For the second straight game, Matt Loos led the team in kills by recording 15. Senior Steve Goedtel (Eden, NY/Eden) and Tetreault both had 6 kills.
As a team, D'Youville recorded 42 kills with 40 digs. Seven different Spartans recorded kills for the team. Three players tied with 2 blocks each.
The men will start their second day of the SUNYIT Invitational at 11am against Wells College on Saturday. D'Youville will play their second and final game of the day at 1pm against the host SUNYIT.
