Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville Men's Volleyball Team created an intense atmosphere for their home opener Tuesday evening against the visiting Penn State-Behrend Lions, but ultimately lost by the final score of 3-2.
Penn State-Behrend took the first set 25-17, but D'Youville played a strong second match and won 25-18. The Spartans fought hard but fell in the third set 25-22. D'Youville led early in the fourth match, but the Lions worked to get back into and tie the game. D'Youville's intensity allowed them to take control of the set and win the match 25-23 to force a game deciding fifth set. The Lions put on the pressure in the fifth set, winning 15-8 and taking the game 3-2.
Leading the way on offense and defense was the team's leader from the weekend, Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island). Coming off of his SUNYIT All-Tournament Team weekend, the freshman led the team in kills (17) and digs (11) Tuesday evening. Several times throughout the game, the Grand Island graduate made huge plays including several game changing kills.
Junior Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) and sophomore Collin McMahon (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) also played well for the Spartans. Cawthorn was second in both kills (12) and digs (9). McMahon led all players with 45 assists and all D'Youville players with 2 service aces.
The men will look to get their first home win of the season on Sunday, February 1st in the College Center Gym as they take on Stevenson at 10am.
