Buffalo, NY - An early start for the D'Youville Men's Volleyball Team on Sunday morning led way to an exciting beginning to the afternoon as the Spartans defeated the visiting Stevenson Mustangs for their first home win of the season by the final score of 3-2.
Stevenson came out strong the first game, winning by the score of 25-13. However, the resilient Spartans came back hard in the second game. The game was tied for most of the second set, with D'Youville scoring 3 straight times to take a 18-17 lead. The Mustangs would tie it up, but a kill by Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) would give D'Youville the lead, and the team look the second set 25-21.
The Mustangs came out strong once again in the third set, taking it 25-16 and looking like they were in control of the game. Stevenson took an early lead in the fourth, but D'Youville took over the lead at 18-17 with back-to-back kills from Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) and Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island). Huge blocks from Loos, Tetreault and Collin McMahon (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) allowed D'Youville to take the fourth set by the final score of 25-23, forcing a deciding fifth set.
The Spartans brought their intensity into the fifth set and came out with the crowd supporting them. Evan Singer (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) and Tetreault came out leading the team with big kills and digs. Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) also poured on the offense. As the D'Youville built up their lead, Stevenson called a timeout, however that timeout wasn't enough to cool down the Spartans after Tetreault sealed the game with D'Youville winning 15-11.
Tetreault had another outstanding game to begin his Spartan career, tying for the team lead in kills with Brett Cawthorn with 16. Brock was also second on the team in digs with 14, 1 behind team leader Alex Johnson (Lancaster, NY/Clarence) who recorded 15. Cawthorn had 9 digs and 3 assists, with Johnson tallying 2 assists himself.
Collin McMahon led D'Youville in assists with 39 and also had 12 digs. Chris Busha and Matt Loos had 5 kills each, with Evan Singer and recording 4. Loos led the team with 9 block assists, while McMahon had 4 and Singer with 3. Steve Goedtel (Eden, NY/Eden) also played well for the red, black and white.
The men will take to the road for their next game as they travel to Medaille to play SUNYIT on Friday, February 13th at 8pm. D'Youville lost to SUNYIT earlier this season by the score of 3-1.
