Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville Men's Volleyball Team avenged an earlier season loss against SUNYIT by defeating them Friday evening by the final score of 3-0 as the two squared off at Medaille for the NEAC Crossover.
The first game started out even between the Spartans and the Wildcats with the game being tied at 9. D'Youville then went on a run to take hold of the game 15-9. SUNYIT scored 2 quick points to make an attempt to get back in the game, but the Spartan's offense continued to roll, taking a commanding 21-12 lead and took the first game by the final score of 25-17.
Game number two got off to a similar start as the first, with the game in D'Youville's hands at 9-8. The Spartans once again got on a roll scoring 13 out of the next 19 points in the game to take control over the second set. D'Youville would finish out the set strong, taking the second game 25-14.
D'Youville entered the third game in control of the match, owning a 2-0 lead over SUNYIT. Sticking with the trend of the first two games, both teams played an even beginning to the third set. The Spartans once again turned it on in the middle of the set, but SUNYIT worked to keep the match alive. However, D'Youville made up for their earlier season loss against the Wildcats by defeating SUNYIT 25-22, taking the game 3-0.
Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) continued the impressive play to begin his junior season Friday night by leading the team with 10 kills and was second on the team in digs with 7. Cawthorn's . 259 kill percentage was amongst the best on the team.
Senior Steve Goedtel (Eden, NY/Eden) and junior Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) tied for second on the team with 6 kills each. Goedtel added 6 digs and 4 assists while Loos chipped in with 2 digs and added 2 block assists and a .357 kill percentage. Fellow junior Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) had a very good game on both ends, leading the team with 27 assists and tied for a team high 8 digs. Busha also had 2 block assists and and 2 kills.
Freshman Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) continued the impressive start to his Spartan career with 5 kills and tied for a team high 8 digs. Tetreault led the team with 2 service aces and added in a block shot. Senior Evan Singer (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) had 4 kills, 4 digs and a team high 2 solo blocks. Senior Alex Johnson (Clarence, NY/Lancaster) had 3 digs.
The men will look to keep up their current 2 game win streak as they play Wells at 2pm on Saturday at Medaille.
