Buffalo, NY - The atmosphere in the College Center Gymnasium on Sunday wasn't what you would think for an 11am start time, but the D'Youville Men's Volleyball Team brought the intensity and fire, defeating rival Medaille 3-2.
Medaille jumped out to an early lead over the Spartans by taking an 8-5 lead. The Mavericks would hold onto that lead and extend it to 5 points just a few minutes later, holding a 15-10 lead on 4 straight points. A service error by Medaille gave D'Youville an opportunity to get back into the game. A kill from Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) got the D'Youville offense going, but Medaille's offense began to slide. Four straight attack errors from Medaille gave the Spartans a 16-15 lead over the visitors, cancelling out the Maverick lead.
Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) tied the game at 18 on a kill, which gaveBrett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) an opportunity to strike. Five straight serves from Cawthorn resulted in D'Youville taking a 23-18 lead. Two of those points were services aces from Cawthorn. A kill from Tetreault ended the first set of the game with D'Youville as the victors 25-20.
Evan Singer (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) opened up the scoring for the Spartans on a kill. Both teams weren't their sharpest, with 6 of the next 9 points in the set coming on errors from each team. Medaille began to apply pressure taking a 17-12 lead over the Spartans as the set went on. Key kills from setup man Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) helped pull D'Youville back into the set, down 16-17 to the Mavericks. However, Medaille scored 8 of the next 9 points and took the set 25-17.
The third set between the two rivals was an even game for the first several points, with neither team able to get a hold of the game. A kill from Steve Goedtel (Eden, NY/Eden)brought the game to 10-9 Medaille. The two teams continued to trade points until the Mavericks really began to pull away going on a stretch of outscoring the Spartans 11-3. The Mavericks closed out the set winning 25-14, looking to close out the game in the fourth set.
An energized D'Youville squad came out in the fourth set determined to put the game back in their favor, and that's exactly what they did. Cawthorn stepped up to the plate for D'Youville, scoring two kills and two service aces to give the Spartans an early 6-5 lead. Six straight services from Tetreault resulted in as many points for D'Youville as the team took a 17-8 over their rivals in the crucial fourth set. The Mavericks clawed back into the game scoring 4 straight points to cut the lead to 6, but the intensity and overall power of the D'Youville Volleyball Team was too much for the Medaille to overcome, losing the set 25-19.
The deciding fifth set had both teams giving it their all, feeding off of the passion brought in from the crowd. Every point by the two heated rivals would be met with a combination of cheers and groans. The set was tied at 7 until Busha took over the reins of the game and refused to let it slip away. From Busha's serves came 5 straight points for the Spartans, giving them a 12-7 lead. Medaille managed to get the game within reach, but it was to no avail as the D'Youville Spartans put down their guests by the score of 15-12, winning the game in 5 sets.
Brock Tetreault and Brett Cawthorn had nearly identical stats for the game. The two each had 11 kills (team high) and 6 digs. Cawthorn had 5 service aces to Tetreault's 2.
