Buffalo, NY – After their thrilling victory over Medaille, the D'Youville Men's Volleyball Team played a second game on Sunday, facing off against another local rival and defeating the Hilbert Hawks 3-2.
Picking up where they left off against Medaille, Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) and Steve Goedtel (Eden, NY/Eden) came out strong in the first set against the Hawks. Both were serving the ball well, and kills from Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) and Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) gave D'Youville an early 10-4 lead. Hilbert tried to gain their footing, but the Spartans weren't willing to give in and continued to put on pressure, extending their lead to 20-13 on a kill from Goedtel. The Hawks would finally find some traction, but it was too late as Cawthorn ended the set on a kill, giving D'Youville the 25-21 win.
The second set brought out some fire in the visiting Hawks, as they were with the Spartans at every point of the game. Neither team could pull away from the other, with the score being tied at 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 until Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) gave D'Youville a 16-14 lead, their largest of the set. The two teams were tied at 23 after a Loos kill, but the Hawks wouldn't go away and forced the game to 24 all. D'Youville took the next 2 points to take the set 26-24.
Hilbert was on the brink of defeat, but were certainly not out of the game by any means. The third set started out much like the previous two, with the WNY rivals trading points early and often. Late kills from Tetreault bring the game to 20-19 Hilbert, but the Hawks would fight off defeat for at least one more set, defeating the Spartans 25-20.
Feeding off their momentum from the third set, the Hawks came out determined to force a fifth set. Quickly outscoring the host Spartans 14-5, Hilbert meant business and were looking to put their mark on the game. D'Youville could not build on any momentum, not putting together back-to-back points at any moment in the set. Hilbert took the fourth set 25-14 to force a deciding fifth set.
Saving their best volleyball for last, D'Youville had managed to hold off the charging Hawks and worked a tie ball game with them at 6 in the fifth set. Evan Singer (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) came up late in the game with major kills, bringing back the intensity that defined D'Youville Men's Volleyball. Busha, Tetreault and Cawthorn all made huge plays late, along with tireless defensive work from Alex Johnson (Lancaster, NY/Clarence) and offense from Loos to give D'Youville a 15-10 win over the Hawks on a Cawthorn kill.
Steve Goedtel was a force for the Spartans, contributing all over the stat sheet. The senior had 11 kills, 6 digs and 3 huge service aces. Brett Cawthorn led the team with 14 kills and added 8 digs. Brock Tetreault had 11 kills and 14 digs, second on the team. Chris Busha once again handed out assists like there were free, recording a team high 45. Busha also contributed 5 kills and 6 digs and a team high 4 block assist. Alex Johnson led the team with 16 digs.
Evan Singer had 6 kills and 5 digs, making key plays when the team needed him to. Matt Loos accounted for 5 kills and was second on the team with 3 block assists. Logan Krass (Oswego, NY/Oswego) also saw action for the Spartans.
Sunday extended the Spartan's winning streak to 5, and the team will look to extend that streak in their next game on Friday, March 6th against Keuka at Penn State-Altoona. The game will begin at 6pm.
