Men's Volleyball Quiet the Storm, Take Sixth Straight

Altoona, PA – With another weekend comes another tournament for the D'Youville Men's Volleyball Team, and Friday night the Spartans took on Keuka College in Penn State-Altoona and defeated the Storm by the final score of 3-2, extending their winning streak to 6 games.

Keuka pulled out to an early 6-3 lead in the first set of the game, and would control that lead for several points. D'Youville pulled back to within 1 after a Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) kill on assist from Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) to notch the score at 12-11 Keuka. Opening up an 18-14 lead, the Spartans called a timeout and got right back in the game, forcing 3 straight errors by the Storm. Keuka would fight to regain control of the set, but a late push from D'Youville gave them the win, 25-23.

The second game was not as closely contested as the first with D'Youville hold firm early and leading 7-6. However, Keuka would come alive, outscoring the Spartans 13-3, taking a 19-10 lead. The storm would continue their dominance in the second set, winning by the score of 25-14.

The third set was much closer than the second, with both teams playing a close game. Down 4-3, Steve Goedtel (Eden, NY/Eden) landed a service ace to tie up the game. D'Youville would gain the lead at 6-5 following 2 Keuka errors, followed by a third to extend their lead. A block from Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) drove the score to 5-8 D'Youville. The team wouldn't trail for the rest of the set, getting big points from Cawthorn, Goedtel and Evan Singer (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South). D'Youville would take the third set 25-22.

D'Youville looked to close out the game in the fourth set, up 2-1. Holding a 15-10 lead, the Spartans looked as if they would bring the game to an end in their favor. The Storm began chipping away at the Spartan lead, closing the score to 21-20. Within a matter of a few plays, Keuka took the lead late and would take the fourth set by the final score of 25-23, driving the game to a deciding fifth set.

Coming out to a quick 3-0 lead in the deciding set, D'Youville showed they didn't want to lose their first league game. Keuka would come back and tie it up at 3, and the two teams would go point-for-point until the score was 9-9. The Spartans opened up a 3 point lead at 12-9, and would go on to with the set by 3 with the final of 15-12. The 3-2 win keeps D'Youville unbeaten in the conference and owners of a six game winning streak.

St. Francis alums Brett Cawthorn led the Spartan offense on Friday evening. Cawthorn had a team high 17 kills, while Busha led the team with 43 assists. Brock Tetreault was second on the team with 11 kills, while Matt Loos and Steve Goedtel were right behind the freshman with 10 kills each. Evan Singer added 5 kills, while Busha recorded 2.

On the defensive end, 5 different D'Youville players were in double-figures for digs. Alex Johnson (Lancaster, NY/Clarence) led the team with 18, with Tetreault also second in digs with 14. Busha had 12 digs, while Goedtel and Cawthorn had 11 each. Singer had 2 and Loos had 3 to go along with his team leading 3 blocks.

Four different players recorded double-doubles against the Storm on Friday, playing a complete team game.

The next game for the men will be on Saturday at 11am against Lancaster Bible. D'Youville will then play again against the host Penn State-Altoona Lions at 5pm.
