Altoona, PA – The D'Youville Men's Volleyball Team made it a clean sweep over the weekend after defeating the host Penn State-Altoona 3-1 in their final game of the NEAC Crossover, winning their eighth straight game and remaining undefeated in conference play.
D'Youville opened up the game with a kill from Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) followed by a service ace from Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) to make it a quick 2-0 lead. The Lions tied it up at 2 not long after. The Spartans opened up a 7-3 lead on a Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) kill, but Penn State-Altoona battled back to tie the game. From that point on, D'Youville would step up their play and outscore the home team 9-3. Kills late in the set from Evan Singer (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) and Cawthorn would clinch the first set in D'Youville's favor by the final of 25-23.
The second set ended in the same score, but with D'Youville on the losing end. Holding a lead for most of the set, the Spartans were in the driver's seat at 15-10 until the Lions scored 5 unanswered to tie the score at 15. The two teams were tied once again at 20 after a Tetreault kill on an assist from Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis). Penn State-Altoona's rally was too much for D'Youville to hold off as the Lions took set number two 25-23, tying the game at 1.
Both teams battled to an 11-11 tie in the third set after keeping the score within 2 points of one another in the first several minutes. Three errors from the Lions sent D'Youville up by 3, giving the team an opportunity to capitalize and take control of the set. Kills from Loos and Tetreault gave the Spartans an 18-14 lead. Loos, Tetreault and Singer all laid on pressure late and drove the Spartans to another 25-23 win, giving the team an opportunity to win the game in the fourth set.
Penn State-Altoona came into the fourth set doing their best to fight off elimination. The Lions were in front of the Spartans, but could not hold off the conference leaders for long. Busha came up with two big plays, recording a kill of his own and taking one away from the Lions with a block. Steve Goedtel (Eden, NY/Eden) then stepped up, assisting on a block with Loos and slamming home a service ace. Following the Goedtel ace, Busha would get another big kill with an assist from Alex Johnson (Lancaster, NY/Clarence) giving D'Youville a 13-11 lead.
The two teams would tie several times up until the game was tied at 22 when Loos broke the tie and sent D'Youville up by one. Two attack errors from Penn State-Altoona would give the Spartans the final 2 points they needed to win the set 25-22, winning the game 3-1.
Brock Tetreault was the team leader in kills with 15. Brett Cawthorn was second on the team with 11, with Matt Loos behind him tallying 10, and Evan Singer with 9. Singer's .600 kill percentage was tops on the team. Chris Busha once again led the team in assists, dishing out 43. Busha also had 4 kills and Steve Goedtel had 5. Goedtel's 2 service aces were a team high.
On the defensive end, Alex Johnson brought his shovel and had 19 digs, a team high. Cawthorn had 12 digs as well. Loos had a team high 5 high blocks. All 7 D'Youville players recorded at least 1 dig in the game.
D'Youville currently holds an 8 game winning streak and is first in the conference with a 7-0 record. Their next game comes on Saturday, March 14th at 2pm at SUNYIT. The team will then play Wells at SUNYIT at 4pm.
