Altoona, PA – The D'Youville Men's Volleyball Team opened up their Saturday double-header by downing Lancaster Bible in 3 sets to win their seventh game in a row by the final score of 3-0.
D'Youville came out to a dominating start. Up early in the first set 6-1 after 5 straight points, Lancaster Bible gained a point to try to stop the bleeding. Kills from Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) and Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) on assists from Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) would get D'Youville rolling again. Steve Goedtel (Eden, NY/Eden) added back-to-back service aces as part of a 5-0 run from the Spartans. Another 7-0 run from D'Youville gave the Spartans a 19-3 lead and they would take the first set soon thereafter by the score of 25-11.
The second set would be a similar performance from the Spartans. On two separate occurrences, D'Youville would score 4 unanswered points. Kills from Cawthorn, Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island), Alex Johnson (Lancaster, NY/Clarence) and Logan Krass (Oswego, NY/Oswego) would be too much for Lancaster Bible to handle, with D'Youville taking the second set by the score of 25-15.
Heading in the third set, D'Youville looked to close out the game without suffering a loss, and that is just what they did. Tetreault came out and delivered two early kills and a service ace to give the Spartans an 8-2 lead. Four straight serves from Cawthorn would help give the team a 5-0 run and send them up 15-6. A late kill from Kevin Kelly (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) would seal the deal for the Spartans in the third set, winning by the score of 25-15 and the game of 3-0.
All 10 players that played for the Spartans recorded at least 1 kill, with Steve Goedtel leading the way with 8. Brock Tetreault followed up with 7 and then Brett Cawthorn and Evan Singer (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) each recording 6. Alex Johnson, Chris Busha, Kevin Kelly and James Zeiger (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) all recorded 1.
Johnson led the team with 10 digs, Tetreault took second with 9 digs and Cawthorn had 7. Matt Loos had 2 blocks to go along with his 3 kills and 3 digs. Tetreault and Goedtel each had 2 service aces to lead the team. Busha recorded a team high 29 assists.
