Utica, NY – The D'Youville Men's Volleyball Team Continued their hot stretch of games, winning their 10th game in a row and sweeping their 4th straight weekend as they defeated host SUNYIT 3-0 and the Wells College Express by the final score of 3-2.
D'Youville came out in their first game of the day looking to stay undefeated in league play and that is just what they did. The Spartans dominated the first set, winning by the score of 25-13. SUNYIT put forth a much different effort in the second set, but D'Youville would hold off the Wildcats and defeat them by the final of 30-28. The hosts would again play well in the third set, but the Spartans would be too much to handle as they won 25-22, taking the game 3-0.
Wells looked to give the Spartans their first defeat in conference play, and started it off by defeating D'Youville in the first set 25-21. The Spartans would answer back by taking the second set 25-23, but the Express would repeat their winning score of 25-21 in the third set. D'Youville forced a deciding fifth set after defeating Wells in the fourth set 25-17. The Express did their best take away the 0 in the loss column, but the Spartans wouldn't let that happen, taking the fifth set 15-11 and won the match 3-2.
Brett Cawthorn (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis) was the standout player in the game, tallying a team high 19 kills and was tied for second on the team with 8 digs. Evan Singer (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) and Brock Tetreault (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) tied for second on the team with 12 kills each. Tetreault tied with Cawthorn in digs with 8, along with Alex Johnson (Clarence, NY/Lancaster). Steve Goedtel (Eden, NY/Eden) had a team high 9 digs to go with 4 kills.
Matt Loos (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) had 8 kills to go with his 4 total blocks, which tied for the team high with Singer and Chris Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis). Busha also led the team with 3 assists and had 6 digs. All 7 D'Youville players that played recorded at least 1 kill in the game.
The next match for the Spartans comes on Tuesday, March 17th at 7pm against Penn State-Behrend in Erie, PA.
